Amidst the growing climate crisis, nature offers powerful solutions to mitigate coastal flooding, erosion, and ocean acidification.

From mangroves shielding coastlines to oysters filtering polluted waters, hope is everywhere. But it takes dedicated individuals to harness these natural wonders and reintroduce them to a world that has moved away from nature-based solutions.

Introducing Operation Restoration, a new five-part film series that highlights five of our remarkable ecosystem restoration grantees. Through the eyes of those on the front lines, we'll share their passion, determination, and the impact of their work in restoring the planet’s balance.

ABOUT THE EPISODES

"ROOTS" LAS CALDERAS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

In the Dominican Republic, baseball isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life. But as the game thrives, rapid development threatens the country’s mangroves, which play a vital role in the ecosystem. In "Operation Restoration: Roots," we meet Ismael Diaz-Tolentino, an ecologist and Seacology’s Mangroves & Sports Program Coordinator. He leads the “Play for the Mangroves” initiative, merging conservation with the nation’s love for baseball to inspire environmental stewardship and restore balance to the natural world.

"OYSTER" WELLFLEET, MA, USA

In "Operation Restoration: Oyster," we explore the work of the Massachusetts Oyster Project through the perspectives of citizens, scientists, students, and government officials. This nonprofit is dedicated to restoring oyster populations through cultivation, shell recycling, advocacy, and education. Their efforts aim to revitalize the ecosystem and promote sustainable practices for a healthier marine environment.

"RIVER" CHICAGO, IL, USA

"Operation Restoration: River" introduces the Urban Rivers team, a group of passionate individuals, including Phil, Nick, Owen, and Bubba, who are restoring the Chicago River with the Wild Mile project. Through sustainable watershed management, floating wetland gardens, and mussel installations, they create urban wildlife habitats and filter pollutants, working toward a future where the river is swimmable again.

"GLOW" VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO

In "Operation Restoration: GLOW," we follow the efforts of Hatuey, Mark, and Airamzul as they work to enhance climate resilience at the bay’s entrance. By studying water samples, planting mangroves, and engaging the community through workshops, the team at Vieques Conservation & Historical Trust aims to empower locals and protect this ecological treasure, ensuring its survival for future generations.

"LAGOON" VERO BEACH, FL, USA

"Operation Restoration: Lagoon" features the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and its efforts to protect aquatic ecosystems. Through innovative technologies and community engagement, ORCA focuses on improving water quality to preserve marine life. We meet Missy Weiss, Director of Citizen Science & Education, and citizen-scientist Ricky Acra, as they install breakwaters and plant seagrass to restore the lagoon’s health.

Jamie Haines, sailor “I grew up on the ocean, and in order to protect it, we need to solve the climate crisis. It all goes hand in hand.”

our story image

Ian Walsh, big wave surfer “As athletes, ocean health and sustainability are at the heart of what we do – without the ocean, we wouldn’t be here.”

Steve Benjamin, filmmaker “I really want people to fall in love with the ocean, to appreciate it more, and to try to alter their behavior around it. Everything ends up in the ocean, and it’s such a dumping ground for humanity. My hope is that people see the ocean as a living entity that needs to be protected.”

Amory Ross, storyteller “How can I describe the ocean? The ocean is impossible to describe because it is endless; it is full of life, wonder, and mystery.”

Todd Hannigan, surfer, composer, filmmaker “For my entire life, if things were upside down, I could always count on the ocean to set me straight.”
